In memory of Francis M.

Fine, I said no more personal blogs but this one is a public issue because it concerns the loss not only of a friend but of a public figure. I did blog about this earlier. So yeah, whatever:

When I was a little boy, I danced to Mga Kababayan Ko. I was singing Kaleidoscope World all the time during my childhood. These were songs that had meaning, beauty and most importantly a sense of value. They signified an artist's honest expression of love for country and his fellow men.

I met Francis M during an event last October. By that time, he was already fighting with leukemia for several months. Despite his sickness, he chose to go to the forum because it was being organized by Don Bosco school. We were both alumni of the Don Bosco system and we came from the same campus in Kalentong. I would like to share some of the things we talked about to give you an idea about the kind of person he truly was.

He first said that we are all advocates in one way or another and when you go down to the basics, its the choice of what you advocate that is important. Meaning, we have to search for what we are passionate about. For him, its his love of country and of his fellow men that he advocates through everything he does.

He talked about his art and how it is a medium to convey the important message that he wants people to hear about. After the forum we talked a lot about my advocacy on trafficking and he said he felt strongly about this issue. He said that bad governance and poor systems has created an environment where people are forced to leave the country.

Then he spoke about his sickness and I can remember that vividly. He said:

"If indeed God wills this sickness to take my life, I will live through my music. Every time a person hears my voice on the radio, I will be alive through them. I will live through my message of love of country above all else."

He started a multiply account detailing his "happy battle" against cancer. He said that while cancer means death, to him it allowed him to celebrate his life. So while this is a terrible tragedy to Philippine music, we know that he died without regret and for as long as his music lives on, he will always be here with us.

RIP, Francis M. You are a true legend.

Debate questions (result of peer pressure)

What was the first motion that you ever debated in? As in yung first?
Once nung HS. Stupid classroom debate na truistic ang motion: THBT children's rights should be protected. Opp kami!!! Tae! Ano gagawin ko, e di malamang sabi ko kids should be killed: wala nang child labor, wala nang overpopulation and most of all, tapos na ang debate na yun dahil lahat kami kids. Ayan, naging humor round bigla.

What was the last motion naman?
Official: Right to a Muslim nation ata. CG with Ely.
Non-official: XDT training about VFA. NVM

Who was your first ever debate partner in your first ever debate tournament? What was your team letter then?
SBC C - JPES. wahaha

Who was your last debate partner in your last debate tournament? What was your team letter then?
Intramuros IVs with Ely. Swing A. @_@ First time nanalo ng Swing.

Did you progress naman from your first tourney to the last? Or have you been consistently banban? Be honest.
Sana naman kahit konti. -_-'

Which format do you prefer? BP, Asians, or Australs? Bakit naman?
Any of the two 3-on-3s. 1. Coz I do better. 2. Setting up. Those who remember my starting days in college debating will know why I love setting up. 3. Reply. 4. Win or lose 5.

What is your most memorable round so far in your debate career? Why?
1. AUDC Bandung Quarters. Sobrang hirap ng motion: THBT sperm donors should have parental rights. Haaaaayyyyy.... setup to the max. Reply is drama to the max. Panic all the while. Para kaming mamamatay ni Miko at DS. Tapos 4-3 split. Nag away pa si Sani at Sushil muntik na mag batuhan. After 3 hrs of fighting. Ayun, nakalusot.... haay.

2. Australs round vs Melbourne. This time, si Derek naman ang adj. Wala lang nagpatawa lang kami nanalo kami wahahaha.

At Grands 2008. Peterson and Evan sobrang galing. @_@

5. Mga 2 or 3 rounds na sobrang bitter ako. (ahem... australs semis)

What was the hardest room that you've ever been in? Kamusta naman?
- PIDC 2008 Finals. Malamang mahirap!!!
- Australs round 6 vs Sydney A. Magaling sila. Pero mostly dahil nagkamali kami sa prep. :|

Pwedeng present debater or one of the ancients. At bakit?
Len Uy, Arlene Maneja, wala na akong maisip. Siguro si Claire kasi di kami nagkita sa Intramuros for reasons beyond our control. First time ko makita UPD A sa pinakailalim na slot. CO pa sila so last team on the list. lol

Haaaay buhay.

I would like to refer the honorable speaker to the previous item.

What was your most banban round ever? Anung kabanbanan ang ginawa mo?
HAAAAY!!!

Ang bobong ending ko sa worlds: "Justice can not be brought and should not brought..." nakatingin sa akin nga masama si Gica. Pag upo ko. Oh... I mean BOUGHT. wahahaha

Do you have a debate grudge against someone?
Ngayon wala na to be honest. Lumipas na.

Debate grudge against an institution?
No.

Weh, sinong debater ito?
Alam mo chismoso ka.

At anong institution ito?
See. Chismoso ka talaga.

Did you ever have an 'upset' moment? Pwedeng kayo ang na-upset o kayo ang nag-upset.
Hindi upset ang semis ng PIDC. Speaker scores lang difference natin lol

Naupset kami ng NUS-B nung semis pagkatapos nilang mag squirrel ng isang impossibleng proposal ewan ko paano nangyari :( Hi Mark, Alex and Vishal lol. Haaay.

Walang hustisya yun!

NDC 2007. ICANN motion. Nag first kami ni Czarina over 2 very strong UPD teams. Kaya na-cap sina Nicolo at Claudia. Feel ko they deserved to have gone much further there kasi tinalo naman nila kami 2x at magaling din talaga sila sa round na yun. Minalas lang siguro.

Was it justified naman ba?
I would like to refer the honorable speaker to the previous item.

Which is a perfect segue to my next question: Have you ever been adjed by a banban adj?
Pls read Estelle's post. wahaha Yeah marami na. You should be banban friendly talaga.

Paki-explain. Ano pala ang ginawa niya sayo?
Yung worse ata... sinabi nila you were great! You made the debate clear finally! I think of all the teams you have the most solid case and most coherent structure. 3rd kami. Galing no? hahaha

Malay mo gagaling din sila in a few decades.

What was your favorite break night ever?
Australs 2008 break night and PSDC break night.

And why?
Go forth and multiply. Saka sobrang daming lasing. Saya pa ng sayawan. Grabe ang galing ni David and Bobby I swear.

After a while, may lumabas na dalawang lalaki from the cubicle where they were standing sa harap.

@_@ wahahaha

Do you have any debate ritual?
Madalas ako mag CR before the round. For a while we had Joss in our hearts and Joss in our minds. When I write my opponent's team sa list... i CROSS THEM OUT. wahahaha

Did it help you break naman?
Wait lang ha, tanong ko sa kanila.

Do you look forward to being an adjudicator once you graduate from your debate career?
Ang tagal ko nang nag-aadj!

Have you ever debated Oregon-Oxford?
Once ininvite kami ng Siliman. Malamang wala kaming alam sa Or-Ox. wahaha. In short: banban kami.

Hey, baby, want to make a new format tonight.
Sure... my place? :))

And that's how mommy and daddy gave birth to their little baby which they called: Worldschools Format. wahahaha

We have to move on. Thanks for the memories but we can't be lovers forever. hahaha

Di naman entirely. May coaching pa ako ng HS debate. haha Baka magalit sa akin XDT haha

Funny/Weird story that I just told the ICA ladies. TRUE STORY.

Guy who shall remain Nameless and country-less. UN special session on kids, 2002.

So the dude walks up the podium very dignified. He starts reading his speech:

"Ladies and gentlemen. Pause.

Look to the left. Look to the Right. Smile.

The children of today are suffering with Emphasis.

We can not let this go on Pause

It is our generation's duty emphasis to be the change. Pause"

Then around three minutes into the speech, his secretary goes to him on the stage and tells him: "Sir, please don't read the items in the parenthesis. Those are actions that you should be doing".

Then he goes:

"Ladies and gentlemen." (then he paused)
(he looked to the left and looked to the right then predictably smiled).

The sad thing is... WE COULDN'T LAUGH. He was a delegate of his country and he was there on a ministerial capacity. @_@

For the future WSDC Qatar Team

Having conversed with three of my old friends last night, I feel better. When I went back to work today, I felt like all the glum has gone away.

So this blog is really about my suggestions for the next WSDC team. NOTE: I am making a comprehensive report that I will give to the future coaches and teams so that they know what they are getting into. In the meantime, this is a summary of what I believe should be done in order for us to have a stronger Philippine Team.

  1. A PERMANENT COACH (look for one). In WSDC, it seems to me that ONLY THE PHILIPPINES has a revolving coaching system. Singapore’s coach for instance has been there for eleven years. She has organized a WSDC tournament before and is a member of major committees. Singapore had 4 speakers in the top 10 and made it to semis. Some coaches have been there for as long as 20 years. Why? The WSDC system is fundamentally different from anything we know. It takes a while to master. A lot of our success was attributed to guesswork and last minute preparation (the night before was crucial). Coaches gain experience over time and are able to share the style better to their team. Our revolving coaching system is not serving us well at all
  2. Cooperation from the other  top schools. Since they are representing Team Philippines, it is ideal that they get exposed to the various debating philosophies in our country. I don’t think that all these philosophies are equal, but you see, in WSDC, the adjes are so diverse that you need to have a certain universality in the way you argue. A broad spectrum of people watching you speak will certainly help. To illustrate this. One of our speakers got a 78.5 and a 69 IN THE SAME ROUND.
  3. Strengthen the WSDC, Inc. which Jimmy Soriano, Myself, Miko and several other parents established. Right now the WSDC, Inc. seems to be inactive during the rest of the year prior to the selection of the team. This is weird because WSDC, Inc. is the internationally recognized body that represents the Philippines to WSDC. Batch 2009 plans to change this. We will start with an activity during the summer. A different kind of debate camp which teaches people the WSDC style. Please do come. This is will definitely help you as a debater. This is also a fundraising activity for the next team! WSDC is expensive @_@
  4. We need to teach WSDC style to our kids. I have decided from now on, XDT will be coached like a WSDC team. I realize that this means they will have a problem in terms of local perception and that we might not win anything. I have spoken to some of the kids about it and they are fine with it. There are greater goals than winning.
  5. I think my adjing style will change a little bit as a result. So will my comments for improvement.
  6. To all those who will be involved in the next team… please keep an open mind and let go of your preconceived notions of what a good speech is, what a good debate is and what we are debating for. Just absorb everything and apply it. The people who emphasize this style are not morons, they know what they are doing. For instance, the coach of team Mexico and Argentina is Darragh Grant, 2 time worlds finalist. One of adjes from the UK is Will Jones, current world champion. This is how they train their kids.
  7. BASICS!!!
  8. Intangible qualities of the team also count. How sociable they are for instance. Even how they stand and look at people, that counts greatly in the perception of individuals
  9. Overall, just remember that speaking is persuasion. Everything from your pose, your entrance and your demeanor aids greatly in the way you convince people. AND YES, I did tell the kids this year how they will sit, how they will behave and how they will move during the rounds. Seems to have paid off when adjes give their comment to us.

Gloomy Sunday

A Gloomy Sunday indeed.

I really should have no reason to be a bit glum. In fact, there are plenty of reasons to be happy. First of all, I think collectively the WSDC team 2009 had some of the highest scores ever seen by Filipino teams. Basically four of the kids had 76.5 and one of them got as high as 78.5. To put that in the right context, the best speaker two years ago averaged 74. That's because 70 is average and 71 is already high. Therefore, 78.5 is near, if not, god-like.

Like any team, there were problems along the way but they were resolved quite maturely.

I am very happy about what we have accomplished given that we had only 3 months to train and the fact that everything worked as planned. There were good lessons learned and friendships created. I am proud of what the team has done in the debates. YEY team Athens 2009. It was an honor to be your coach.

Now that I am back to the real world, a part of me is really missing the Athens experience and an equally big part is glad that it is over. WSDC was draining.

I am very confused about how to proceed with my life now. Don’t worry, I know what I HAVE to do but not what I WANT to do.

At the rooftop in Athens, I told some of the kids that it has been ten years since I was in Cyprus and Hawaii and I had an important rooftop conversation with my friends during those times. We talked about life and friendship, our futures and the dreams we will not let go of. That group of friends eventually imploded and disappeared. That said, I realized how fleeting life is and how the relationships we have may vanish over time.

I still have one big problem now. It’s that I know I should be forgiving or let go of any bad feelings but it seems rather impossible at this point. Now people say that time heals all wounds. Not really. There are things I just can’t let slide. I know it’s wrong!!! I just can’t lie to myself. Hopefully it will pass. I think my Sunday is gloomy because I know what I have to do but I seem incapable of doing it. I might not be doing justice to the efforts of some people... but damn! I can't control what I feel.

Three weeks from now, I will be with my friends in Trafalgar Square. We will have coffee, bum around and I will tell them about my current state which is a mixture of joy, pride, nostalgia, regret and anger. Then I will be happy knowing that I do have true friends (really smart ones too). How I wish I was going there now.

Random thoughts from Athens

Haven't blogged about debate in ages. This is a collection of random lessons, observations and experiences I had in WSDC 2009:

3. If you reach out to everyone and you are genuinely interested in people, you will be welcomed by everyone. A lot of humor and intelligent or emphatic conversations really help. They are loveable people :D

4. You win some... you lose some. I lost some friends but gained a lot more. This is heartbreaking still because you don't quantify friends now do you?

5. Obedient kids who obey the right person will do well.

6. I now agree that Style of speaking can win debates.

7. We JUSTIFIABLY lost a debate because we didn't offer enough POIs.

8. Rules are rules! Follow them,

9. I will miss the debaters, coaches and adjes from New Zealand special metion to "mudang", Australia, Canada special mention to "BFF", Israel special mention to "mahal ni Je," India, Pakistan, England, Scotland the thundercats, Wales, Singapore, Thailand (Jeanina Fans Club, yeah we have pics of their poster... creepy), Japan lol Masako, Korea esp CL, Mexico, Ireland esp MS, Netherlands "sumusunod sa galaw mo...", Qatar, Kuwait and we love their parting gift, the Peru... KIDS, Germany and their cool coach, Sweden, Bangladesh, Slovenia, Slovakia and the lalaking di nagbibihis, Namibia... sama ni mudang sa inyo, Indonesia, South Africa. And of course the people of Amazing Greece! Your food rocks! And ang dami!!! Its going to be really hard to database you all but it's worth it.

10. A Style rule we invented: Mind the gap.

11. Unfortunately some people overdid the gap.

12. Owen in Ireland is not spelled that way... but I was able to guess it.

Adik. Hello, puting adj - 73, 72, 74, hindi puting adj na banban 60.5 (.5 away from bottom), 63.5, 63... Nakadrugs ba sya?! Buti nga hindi na sya nag aadj the round after.

15. Aalis ako dito na kilala ako ng lahat ... waahh I will miss them.

17. Contrary to what it seems HINDI MADALI ANG DRAW NAMIN. PAMATAY!!!

18. Don't walk alone into a dark alley where people sniff white powder. IF you do, pretend to be high for your own survival.

19. I would probably go back one day to adj. Not for any other reason apart from the fact that I will really really really miss my many friends. Sad.

21. Minsan gusto kong tumalon sa tulay o magpakain sa hydra.

22. Dan is the best alternate in the history of WSDC. lol

23. If the ambassador gives you a drink and tells you to trust him coz its good... DON'T~!!! It might be 80% alcohol and you might end up doing stuff that you wouldn't normally want to do.

24. If the glass is full... it will not hold water.

25.Worldschools changed everything. And I mean Everything. :D

As vague as these things are, they make all the difference now in the way I see things. I definitely know now what works and what doesn't. More importantly, I know what to do, what steps to take and what decisions I have to make. Time to snap back to reality. Reckoning at hand.

Film Fest 3/8: Shake, Rattle and Roll 10 (X)

Shake, Rattle and Roll X 4 or 3 / 5

I think will give this film a 4 if and only if I walked out after the second segment. But no... I chose to stay. So 3?

I was really very happy with this installment of Shake, Rattle and Roll. Since it is a trilogy (unfortunately, how I wished there were only two of them this time) I will examine all the three parts and rate them. I will keep it vague. :D

Emergency 3.5/5

In this episode, a run-down hospital i attacked by freaky creatures. Overall, I felt that the sense of dread and helplessness was well established. The movie reminded me of scenes from Shake Rattle and Roll 2. Those who know the series will be able the scene where some characters are stuck in a corridor with a locked gate. Classic. I must say that the story is very simple yet effective. At parts I even felt for the creatures and see where they are coming from... but then again, they eat people. The acting was decent. No stand-outs. However, the simplicity of the story is its major strength.

Although a lot of elements were probably borrowed from 30 Days of Night, J-horror films and other sources, it was nuanced to a certain cultural context and reimagined pretty well. In the end this is a fun, bloody and suspenseful episode worthy of the SSR legacy.

Class Picture 4/5

Jean Garcia did a great job in this one as a Spanish nun haunting a school. Make no mistake, she is NOT nice. There is a lot of brutality in this one.

Let me start with the acting. Jean was great as mentioned. Kim was decent. The rest were a bunch of cardboard characters played out exactly like cardboard characters.

So why such a high rating? Atmosphere. Atmosphere is everything. The director was able to transform a simple school overnight into a horrifying ordeal. The school itself seemed to be the strongest character in the movie. There were genuinely creepy moments because the ordinary things we see in class are turned into objects of evil. The classroom, the libraries and the halls with the pictures of nuns were used very, very well. I loved this segment. After the second part, I was thinking: "Shake, Rattle and Roll is back on track."

And then...

Nieves 2/5

WHY??? Why did they put this in the last part of the movie? This Buffy-wannabee looks out of place and rather cheap.

OK so the special effects were outstanding. Yey. Nothing else was. Acting was corny. Humor was lame. Plot didn't make much sense to me. The worst part is... it dragged on and on and on and on... you get the idea. I was playing snake on my phone for a while. This should have been sandwiched in the middle. Why? If it was at the start people might walk out. What a waste. This could have been an all out excellent movie. If you leave after the nun segment. You will feel better about the film.

Film Fest 2/8: Desperadas 2

3/5

Desperadas

I recall my review of Slither before and I remember that I gave it pretty high. Why? Because in the very observant words of Jeanina, it didn't make sense, didn't try and was so bad it was good. The humor was a crass, tactless and uhhh... cringe-worthy. I think the cast fit their role perfectly except Marian Rivera who didn't really seem to act her part that well. Parts of the movie were reminiscent of Bridal Shower as it relishes in sexual jokes and oftentimes looked like a photoshoot for bikinis. Oh well, the ladies had the body for it... especially Ogie who played a Princess from an island state.

The dillemas of the characters were a bit trite to be honest but it was fine. There was no deliberate "Oh, I'm joking" moment as compared to Tanging Ina when you can clearly tell when a joke was about to come out.

Now the bad part. I felt the movie suffered a lot from very bad editing. Scenes were left hanging. One minute you have a moment of suspense, the next minute you are in a bar with two characters being emo then just as you get the idea, it changes into a bath house... WHAT???! Did they employ the same editor as Twilight?

This is not a SMART film. It doesn't pretend to be one and for that I respect it. For people who want to cringe every 10 mins and want to watch a non-pretentious, silly movie. Yeah... have at it.

Film Fest 1/8: Ang Tanging Ina Nyong Lahat

Here I go again. I will now TRY to watch all the Metro Manila Film Fest movies and review them here. UGH.

Anyway let's begin with Ang Tanging Ina Nyong Lahat. I can honestly still remember that the first Tanging Ina was the funniest film of that year. For its second installment, the plot becomes even sillier as Ina finds herself in weird circumstances as the leader of the land. Well to be fair, we have elected some very incompetent politicians in the past so no surprises there. lol

The first half of the film was really hilarious. The jokes were benta. There were no boring moments in the earlier half of the film. Then towards the middle, the movie seemed to become more and more predictable and hence, boring.

I know this is a comedy but some characters just behaved in totally irrationally and inconsistently. For instance, a guy wants to prove his innocence in a murder case through a snap election??? An ignored son becomes part of the opposition and then after a hug reverts back to the government side? A lot of the old humor of Tanging Ina was because the jokes made sense given a certain cultural background but a chunk of the movie didn't make that much sense and it shouldn't have tried.

Still the movie is above average and worth seeing. For one, the acting for the most part was really good. You have in your cast some of the best young actors we have right now. They are not as famous as other mainstream "cuter" people who can't act to save their lives but who cares? Secondly, the movie is funnier than most film recently but is still not as funny as the original. Third, you will learn valuable lessons in life through the random weird quotes interspersed throughout the script. So yeah... go see it if you like this kind of humor. I know I did.

Things we can do without:

1. Double Standard in Service - Why is the Philippines plagued with bad customer service for Filipinos? I was in a restaurant the other day and the waiters made me wait forever just because they were serving some foreigners in another table who arrived 10 mins after we did.

2. Bad Customer Service - I keep calling the customer service of one DSL company. They keep passing me around. When I ask when it will be repaired, they will say they don't know. They will put you on hold for a while then say that there is an upgrade on-going. Which means there's no reason whatsoever. If you ask them for a timetable they will never know. Why can't they just know anything???

3. Supposedly satirical articles/blogs with amazingly silly hasty generalizations about groups of people and individuals that they obviously are clueless about. Mainly because this blog is not funny. Wit might have helped a bit so that they didn't have to resort to the stupidity... but no... that's too much to ask for.

4. Cellphone networks with random unsolicited charges - then they will say: "E binuksan nyo po e!"

5. People imposing their values on others when their value systems supposedly asks them to not judge.

6. People who have the gall to insult other people based on looks when they hide behind anonymity.

7. Mosquitos

8. HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

9. Neighbors who sing until 4am... maaaayyyy weeeee... *vomits*

10. Flakers.

The Groundwork - Exciting Developments

I went to the US embassy here in Manila to meet with MTV and the representatives of the USAID. OK nothing is final yet but I might as well blog about it.

A year ago, while sitting through a fund-raising course, I had an idea to create a concert to advocate human trafficking. As you already see in this site, Dicta License (one of my favorite local bands EVER) created a vid for my org. The bands were ready, the logistics were OK until MTV asked to partner with us so we put it on hold.

A year later, they come back with a plan:

My org (Visayan Forum) and MTV will hold six concerts... yeah that's right SIX concerts in all the major trafficking hotspots or routes in the country. @_@ As of now, we envision the concerts to be free although there will be tickets (PM me na lang if it pushes through and you want tickets but I will require you to help wahahaha). The plan so far is that the Manila Concert will be huge. So far according to MTV, Click 5 is interested to perform alongside other bands from various genres for free in the event. Well, these are all plans... I hope they materialize soon :D If ever, multiply friends, I might need some help from volunteers. lol

In other news: My schedule is hell. Jan = Thailand for 10 days to learn from PDA and Mechai. Feb = Athens for World Schools. Mar = UK for the Skoll Awards. On the bright side... I will get to meet old friends again. We plan a reunion on March. :D YEY.

Moving

The dawn is breaking outside and the night when PSDC 2008 finally finished is over. Today I am moving on. My family is moving to a new house and I am moving into a new life. I have seen that we have a glass ceiling pala. Hilarious when you think about it. I have also discovered a new basement, a new low. lol

They say that everything has a season. And I guess this moving is a signal that nothing in life is permanent and that we must always keep going. The environment around our house has become toxic. We can hear the sound of the palengke and there are numerous vermin scurrying around the area. I saw a big, fat rat earlier... I can't wait to move into my new life. :D

PSDC survival guide

For the HS kids who have added me here (and those who have decided to lurk around my site), here are some tips for PSDC:

1. Be prepared to have motions that you are not prepared for. NONE of the motions have been debated in the HS circuit for the past 4 years. I should know, I have been to every major tournament since 2005 except Idea 1 this year.

2. Do not totally rely on canned arguments. They help in certain occassions but be prepared to let go of them. (this includes you, XDT). Wag ipilit ang hindi pwede. lol

3. Wear a nice costume on break night. Uhh... it doesn't really help in the debate pero at least you will have fun.

4. Interact with everyone. Try to be friendly. TRY HARD. There is more to learn in PSDC than just debating. This is probably the most diverse PSDC ever so take advantage of that diversity to learn, exchange and network. Who knows, you might find your love-life there. lol

5. Try to be polite. Meaning, do not go out after the round and shout !@*&#_(!&#_!&# talaga yang si _______________ in the corridors.... If you have issues, with adjes, approach the adj core. There is more to debate than just winning... though winning is a really lovely treat.

6. Do not be obscene or too offensive in public speaking. Know the limit of class and good taste.

7. Just because some motions seem hard doesn't mean they are. Use common sense.

8. Just because some motions seem easy doesnt mean that they are. Use sophistication.

9. Just because you are sophisticated doesn't mean you will win. You have to ground the debate and you have to be understandable.

10. Debate is a team sport that requires constant learning. This means (fortunately or unfortunately) you will have to work as a team. I know that there is tendency to finger-point or blame people especially when you lose. Learn from every round. If you do lose a round... try to look beyond the "******ADJ YAN!!!" or "***** Ka kasi you should have not rehashed, shafted and ignored my speech!!!" Process the debate with your teammate so that you will do better in the next round or in the next tournament. Try to get comments from your adjes. Take them to heart and learn from every round whether you won or lost. Instead of  stressing yourself out, move on, and have fun. Scientific studies link stress to many different diseases... so yeah, easy lang.

I know you are all excited for PSDC. We in the adj core and at the ADS hope that this will be a truly memorable, challenging and enriching experience for all of you.

Film 31/31: Battle Royale (YEY completed at 11:55 PM, Oct. 31)

This movie absolutely kicks ass. It is bordering on horror, action and suspense. What’s not to love about this film?

Battle Royale is set in a dystopic Japan where older people have begun hating and distrusting the youth. Every year, random high school students are forced into a competition via the Battle Royale law. Which means they kill each other.

This premise was horribly rehashed in The Condemned. Ugh. Anyway, the film has excellent humor, fine acting, cool looking stars, great action and social commentary. These elements make the film a true masterpiece. Now, the idea of high school students may not appeal to everyone and that is understandable. However, if you look at the core of Battle Royale, it is really an exposition of our primal instincts. Think Lord of the Flies but on a murderous rampage. It shows what happens when the gloves are off, when the rules are gone and what man will do if pushed to the limits. The director of this film is one person I will fondly remember this Halloween. He should have had more time in this world to create another masterpiece because Battle Royale 2 sucked.

Wow… 31 films… I can’t believe I did it. Lol That over 65 hours this month :D

Film 30/31: Sa Piling ng Aswang

This is a Filipino film that explores the legend of the Aswang, a monster that can transform easily into animals. This is not like Animorphs or Transformers because they have an appetite for eating human innards as was graphically shown in the first few minutes of the film. A boy's intestines dragged out of his body. Beyond the gore, there are unique elements in the film that are commendable such as use of creepy atmosphere rather than cheap jump scenes. The exploration of the Aswang legend in itself seems to be a noble endeavor for the film-makers.

The portrayal of the Aswang is also interesting because they are given very human elements. They form and protect their own communities, they care for one another and respect others who respect them too. We can sympathize with the Aswangs in the film because their kind and gentle nature is highlighted. The only real problem is that they eat people really. Other than that, they are nice enough.

Film 29/31: The Descent

The descent involves six girls who get trapped in a cave. As they go deeper and deeper into the caverns, they are attacked by a group of monsters who resemble Gollum in the Lord of the Rings. They are called crawlers.

The primal instincts of the girls are released as they battle for survival and see each other fall. Their only real weapon is their pick ax. Towards the end of the film, we see a massive transformation in some of the characters.

The acting could have been improved. Some characters were barely developed before they were dispatch. The film makes up for these weaknesses through fast pacing, non-stop action, great editing and a cool atmosphere. It is a good film all in all but I think it could have benefited from better character development so that we really feel sympathetic about everyone’s survival.
